How the index is made
The same 20 everyday items (the same brand and size at every shop), chosen once from the products the most supermarket chains sell, so that months can be compared. A shop's figure for a month adds up each item's average daily price there that month (the current month so far); today's total uses prices checked in the last 3 days. Only shops that sell all 20 items are ranked; the others show how many they sell. Prices are each chain's own published prices in US dollars. Shops cannot pay to change the order.
